Ok, I just want to start off by saying, what was the plot of this movie? The whole movie is just a blur now because of how much it sucked. Johnny Depp is a journalist that got a new job writing for a local paper in Puerto Rico. From what I've read online, this movie was supposed to be about Johnny Depp having trouble with the patriots on the island. But as a viewer, this movie had absolutely no plot. Johnny Depp is drunk quite a bit, and after a while you just get kind of sick of it... It's just scene after scene of pointless crap. It actually made me feel dirty for some reason. Johnny Depp actually acted quite well, as for Aaron Eckhart... he was horrible. There were some powerful scenes of the movie such as the "I bet you scream before I do" scene. I feel like this movie was trying to be something that it just wasn't. It also tried to be a comedy... what was that? I went to The Rum Diary thinking it would mess with my head, it didn't.
I thought I should eventually do a post on my Academy Awards predictions for this year, so, here it is.
Best Picture:
J. Edgar:
Did you see how old these guys made Leonardo Dicaprio look? This movie looks overwhelmingly influential.
Best Director:
David Fincher for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Ok, how awesome does that look? This looks like it's going to be full of twists and turns. David Fincher has been the long awaited candidate for this category.
Best Actor:
Either Leonardo DiCaprio for J. Edgar or Brad Pitt for Moneyball. Or maybe even Gary Oldman for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
Best Screenplay:
Aaron Sorkin Moneyball. Sorkin also wrote the Oscar winning screenplay for The Social Network and you can really see the similarities between this movie and that.
Best Supporting Actor:
Phillip Seymour Hoffman for The Ides of March
While I am unsure of this one, I think he can pull it off, he was phenomenal in this movie, if he doesn't get the nomination Paul Giamatti sure will.
Best Score:
Trent Reznor for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
From the trailer you can just feel the intensity of the score.
Best Actress:
Michelle Williams for My Week with Marilyn.
Now I really know nothing about this movie however, from what I've heard the critics are raving about her and she is already predicted on other sites to be in this category.
Best Animaton:
The Adventures of Tintin
What other animations have there been this year? This has already gotten a high rating from the people of IMDB and a great Metascore rating, however these ratings are highly likely to change considering the movie didn't come out yet.
Other Movies to get nominated:
The Rum Diary (Johnny Depp)
Drive (Ryan Gosling)
Rise of The Planet of the Apes (Special effects)
The Help (I haven't seen it, everyone loved it, everyone loved it though. The question is if this is just a summer blockbuster or not.)
The Artist (Best Picture)
The Tree of Life (Terrence Malick, Best Cinematography, This was a great movie, it might be a little too artsy for the Academy)
So the Rum Diary looks absolutely bizarre, in a good way. I've never particularly been a fan of Johnny Depp however he doesn't look like he's going to be bad in this. This is a movie about a journalist (Depp) who goes to Puerto Rico to do a story, but he's always drunk. This movie looks powerful, funny, and weird. It's based on a Hunter S. Thompson book, the last Hunter S. Thompson book to be made into a movie was Fear of Loathing in Las Vegas. Now from the looks of the Rum Diary trailer, this movie is sure to mess with your head, it looks even more bizarre then Fight Club. It also looks like there could be a twist somewhere along in the movie. Check out the trailer here:
So I just saw the Ides of March on Friday... and it was truly fantastic. However the first half of the movie or so dragged on quite a bit. But the moment the dirty politics start playing out, that's where it gets exciting. Ryan Gosling is just fantastic in this movie as well as Phillip Seymour Hoffman. George Clooney wasn't bad, but he didn't have a big enough part for me to determine whether he was really good. Now, this movie has a lot of dialogue, so if you're looking for a mindless political thriller blow em up movie, this isn't for you. The dialogue is what essentially made this movie, the level of intensity was just so great when the conversations went on. The cinematography was truly amazing in this movie. They had a shot that showed the silhouettes of Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Ryan Gosling arguing behind a giant American Flag, and that was awesome. The one thing I loved about this movie were the face shots of Ryan Gosling, you can tell by the look on his face how corrupt he really got throughout the whole movie. This movie is an easy 4/5 stars and I would recommend it to anyone who has the patience for a slow start, otherwise it's a great movie!
The title says it all. This blog is just about movies, for movie lovers everywhere. Movie reviews of new movies and old movies. Academy Awards buzz, my favorite movies, my favorite movies of the year etc... To conclude this post, I want you to know my taste of movies to see if your taste matches mine by stating my favorite movies.
2001: A Space Odyssey
This movie is like no other sci-fi film. Usually sci-fi films have no point, yeah they're entertaining but as David Fincher said, "I don't know how much movies should entertain. To me, I'm always interested in movies that scar." 2001: A Space Odyssey is very disturbing, and it made a scar on me and it was extremely entertaining, that right there is a perfect movie in my opinion.
Full Metal Jacket
Now as you can see by now I like Stanley Kubrick. However in this movie Kubrick mix humor with being a very disturbing movie. For instance the scene where everyone in the Army bunk beat Pvt. Pyles with soap. That was one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen in a movie. As for the humorous parts of the movie, "This is my rifle, this is my gun" and other various things throughout the movie. Now this may sound ridiculous, but this movie made me feel good while watching it, there was no parts where I looked at the clock thinking, "Oh there's only half an hour left". It flowed very well.
The Social Network
This movie strayed hugely from David Finchers other work such as Fight Club, Se7en, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button etc... It was a fantastic movie the way they synced the great soundtrack with such a simple thing as solving a math equations on a clear board. Or when Fincher had camera shots of just a computer screen with the music, those shots we're absolutely fantastic and in some way revolutionary we're seeing in movies now such as baseball statistics on a computer in Moneyball. This is also another movie that just flowed perfectly.
Goodfellas
Now I have to add a Scorsese film in here, I am a die hard Scorsese fan. I'm not quite sure why considering he does a lot of the same stuff such as mobs etc... but he seems to be straying away from that recently. Now the Goodfellas is a fun mob movie, yes it is unsettling at some times so don't get me wrong when I say "fun". I mean fun as in not too heavy such as The Godfather, I have tried watching the Godfather once, but it is very, very heavy and in my opinion didn't have such good flow. The cast of Goodfellas was fantastic, some of the best stars that played mobsters Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci (the comic relief but also quite disturbing), and of course... DeNiro.
